Sujet de recherche : High-resolution regional climate modelling of extreme precipitation, windstorms, and associated hydrometeorological risks in Eastern Canada

Abstract :

Soumik Ghosh is a climate researcher at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). His expertise includes high-resolution regional climate modelling, general circulation modelling, extreme precipitation and windstorms, storm-track dynamics, Indian and global monsoon systems, and the impacts of climate change on hydrometeorological hazards.

At ESCER, he uses the CRCM6–GEM5 model, including convection-permitting simulations at 2.5 km resolution, to study extreme weather events in Quebec and Eastern Canada. His work combines model configuration with multi-scenario simulations, spectral-nudging experiments, and soil-moisture sensitivity tests to better understand how atmospheric circulation and surface conditions influence intense precipitation and windstorms.

In a recent study, he investigated the 2019 Halloween windstorm, which caused widespread damage and power outages across Eastern Canada. By comparing convection-permitting and convection-parameterized simulations, he examined how model resolution affects wind gusts, rainfall, and storm movement. His findings demonstrate both the added detail and the limitations of very high-resolution climate modelling.

He is currently investigating how extreme winds across Eastern Canada may evolve in a warming climate, including possible changes in their occurrence, intensity, and duration. Through this work, he aims to improve understanding of regional climate hazards and support climate-impact assessments, adaptation planning, and informed decision-making
